March Reading Challenge information has been sent home! The reading challenge takes place from March 5th (today) through March 30th. All students in 4th grade are already required to read 4 days a week for homework, so this challenge should not be too much of a stretch. Please encourage your child to participate!

Last week, 4th grade begin working on procedural writing. Each student is responsible or writing a procedure for something that is able to be done in the classroom. Some of the topics include making special snacks, washing hands, and making paper airplanes. This Friday, the 4th graders will be sharing their procedures with each other. It is their responsibility to get any needed materials. Please check in with your child to make sure they have their supplies ready!

Math –We are really making great progress with our addition and subtraction of numbers to 10,000. We have been focusing on strategies that help us get started with challenging problems. Students have been using number lines, landmark numbers, and thousand books.

Word Study- We will finish up our unit on long vowel sounds this week. The unit helped us think about the idea of long vowel sounds at the begging, middle, and end of words. As we move into our next unit, we will focus on long vowel sounds created by the silent e, as in ride.

CLASSROOM NOTES & REMINDERS

Thanks for sending in the many different baking goodies for the 4th grade Winter Sports fundraiser! Please check out our blog to pictures of our basket.

Math –Our work on numbers up to 10,00 will continue this week. Our focus has been on place value, understanding what each number represents. We created a 10,000 chart for the classroom and have been playing games focusing on place value. We will be moving on to subtraction with large numbers latter in the week. You’ll notice that the homework in focuses on addition with large numbers, but please remember to continue practicing multiplication combinations (facts) with your child. Remember, to ask HW questions on the blog!

Word Study- We will begin a new unit this week. Our focus will be open syllables and long vowels.  A long vowel sound refers to the sound a vowel makes when it says it’s name (the exception is y which can say /e/ and /i/). An open syllable has one vowel, the vowel is open at the end and the sound is long. For example, solo, tiny, baby.

We have 2,000 new classmates! The red wigglers have arrived and made their home in 4th grade. We learned a lot from Denise Lindgren from Worms In School. Ask your child about our newest friends!

Worms in School!

Guilford 4th grade had the privilege of hosting a Worms in School workshop. We now have over 2,000 worms living in our classroom! The workshop not only taught us about worms, but also about vermiculture - composting with worms. We now have a worm bin in our room where our new friends are eagerly eating food scraps to create vermicompost. Check out the the Worms in School website to read more. http://www.compostingvermont.org/WormsInSchool.html

Here are a few pictures of our afternoon with Master Gardener, Denise Lindgren
Denise is showing the 4th graders how to set up the bin.
Our new classmates are put into their new home!
Everyone got to take a closer look at the red wigglers. We didn't pick them up because the oils on are                                  hands are not safe for their skin.
We had lots of fun looking at the worms!
We even found a baby worm, which had just recently hatched from a cocoon (one of the many interesting facts we learned about worms).

Winter Sports Fundraising

As you may know, a group of parents have come together and formed the winter sports committee. The committee will be raising money to ensure everyone can participate in next years activities, which they are also planning.

The first fundraising effort started today! Each class is responsible for creating a themed basket which will be entered into a raffle. The 4th grade has the exciting job of putting together a baking basket. Please see the sheet that was sent home today in Thursday Folders for more information.

To do my part, I will be purchasing a large mixing bowl for our items to go in. I will also be providing everyone with a recipe card as part of their homework next week. Please help your child to find a favorite recipe to share. This should be a lot of fun!

Homework Questions for the week of 2/6

Use this post to ask any questions regarding the homework. I will check the blog daily by 6pm to answer any questions. Homework is often related to work done in class, so if on Monday there are several questions about homework, it may be helpful to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday night. I will post pictures if necessary to show examples or give explanations.

CLASSROOM NOTES & REMINDERS

We finished last week on a very happy note! In my absence on Thursday, Mr. G. challenged the fourth grade to a great day with a good report from the substitute. The fourth graders worked hard and met this challenge, and for their hard work, received a movie and pizza on Friday! Hats of to them!

Thanks for the feedback about the blog. I would like to be able to use it to post notes and announcements like I did in the past, but would like to also use it as a tool to answer math homework questions. I intend to begin using the blog again this week. Please check it out and post any questions you may have about homework.

Math – Our jump into numbers up to 1,000 has been fun and exciting! We have created 1,00 books that have helped us review place value and also assisted us in solving word problems. This week, we will continue to use our 1,000 books to help us solve addition problems using 3 and 4 digit numbers.

Word Study- We will continue with our vowel sounds unit this week. We have learned that there are 18 vowel sounds in the English language, and that there are more than 200 ways to spell those 18 sounds! This is tough stuff!
